What you're hearing
White noise has equal energy at every frequency, which makes it bright and hissy up close. Here distance works like a soft filter: drag it further away and the top end rolls off, bring it near and it gets sharper. If it still feels too bright, try pink or brown noise.
It's made in code rather than recorded, so there's nothing in it to notice: no hum, no pattern, no seam. Many people put it under other sounds, like a desk fan or rain on the window, to smooth out a noisy room.
